Comic book for the week of Wednesday, May 5, 2010:

Superman: War Of The Supermen #1 (DC) * * * *

The year long New Krypton storyline wraps up finally in this mini-series. All the pins have been set up and are now beginning to get knocked down. And it doesn't take very many pages into this issue for it to begin. The center spread is a heart stopper. The story doesn't just involve New Krypton, but also Earth. Lois and Jimmy team up with the Metropolis super team of Guardian, Steel, Conner Kent Superboy and Nightwing and Flamebird. their goal, to go after Gen. Lane and his Project 7734. But interested eyes and ears are eavesdropping on their conversation. With all of the plotlines that have developed over the past year, now they have reached climax. And everything's blowing up all over. So far, it's a satisfying beginning of the end to this long story. One issue down, three more to go.

Comic books for the week of Wednesday, May 12, 2010:

Adventure Comics #11/514 (Last Stand Of New Krypton #43) (DC)
Superman: War Of The Supermen #2 (of 4) (DC)

Adventure Comics #11/514 (Last Stand Of New Krypton #43) (DC) * * * * *

This was the best issue of the titles I read this week, and my favorite of the whole New Krypton storyline this whole year. this issue wraps up the Legion and Mon-El plot threads of the story. While Brainiac 5 returns the original Brainiac to Colu for imprisonment, the rest of the Legion and Mon-El have a job to do, restore the remaining bottle cities from Brainiac's ship. All or most of them will have links to Legion history. Most of the job is left to Mon-El, but Reep Daggle (Chameleon Boy) has a few specific jobs of his own. The whole Legion sub-plot has been enjoyable, because it signals a return of the Legion to prominence. It's great to see the Legion ship steadied and given a consistent foundation of continuity to build on, after a number of false start reboots.

Superman: War Of The Supermen #2 (of 4) (DC) * * * *

Superman and Supergirl grieve over the events of the first issue, and then pick sides in the battley between Gen. Zod's forces and those of Gen. Lane. the Guardians of Metropolis begin their own attack on Gen. Lane, who is not out of weapons or strategy yet. As this battle unfolds, the stakes get raise higher and higher with each issue. All of the action packed pages still have room for character moments. It's these character moments that make action scenes better than average.

Comic book for the week of Wednesday, May 19, 2010:

Superman: War Of The Supermen #3 (of 4) (DC) * * * *

All of the carnage that has wracked the forces on both sides has finally touched our heroes. One of them makes the ultimate sacrifice in the heat of battle. The fight reaches Earth and sets up the final battle in the last issue. Not so many character moments this issue, but a nice Easter egg for the Newsboy Legion. Among scenes of Earth's heroes battling the Kryponian forces, a sense of carnage is told through broken news transmisisons. This could be a gimick, but in this case it works for me. The last page reminds us just who fight will depend on. The final issue couldn't be set up any better.
